Shiatsu for Pregnancy.

Tricia studied Shiatsu for pregnancy, labour and babies, with Suzanne Yates of Well Mother in Bristol, www.wellmother.org author of the book Shiatsu for Midwives and Beautiful Birth

Why Shiatsu during pregnancy?

According to Traditional Chinese theory, pregnancy together with the postnatal period is considered to be one of the ‘gateways of change’ – times of great hormonal fluctuations.

Recent research, presented in Jan 07 ‘has linked stress experienced by pregnant women to higher incidences of mental and behavioural problems in their children’.

Touch is the essence of Shiatsu. Physical touch can be very reassuring and calming and is very useful during pregnancy. Shiatsu is a wonderful way of getting in touch with the positive, natural changes that occur in your body during pregnancy.

There are many reasons why women choose Shiatsu during pregnancy. This period, as mentioned above, is a very emotional time for women due to hormonal changes. Some women wish to continue supporting their well being or aim towards relaxation and calmness in labour and birth. Others may have specific problems, which can range from morning sickness/nausea and vomiting through to tiredness, lower back pain and cramps and indeed day-to-day fatigue.

Shiatsu is very supportive in helping you with the adjustment to motherhood and towards addressing emotional issues that may precede or come up during your pregnancy.

In Traditional Chinese theory the Kidney energy of the mother is the main source of energy for the foetus, so the Kidney energy becomes utilised from the moment of conception. It is important for the woman to rest otherwise the Kidney energy becomes more depleted with stress and overwork.

Natural Induction

Shiatsu techniques can be used to induce labour if the woman is overdue. Points contraindicated during the pregnancy can now be used for natural induction. If the first stage of labour has started and the contractions have begun to slow down, pressure on some of these contraindicated points can help stimulate uterine activity.

These techniques can be demonstrated to partner; so partner session/s are recommended towards the end of the pregnancy.

Shiatsu during the postnatal period

The postnatal period is a time when many women are naturally highly focused on the baby’s health and well-being. Mothers have a tendency to neglect their own health and ‘put up’ with the stress and discomfort for the sake of the baby. In fact the baby will often be unsettled because the baby can sense the mother’s tension – babies, as mothers come to know, are very sensitive. The postnatal period can be a very tiring period for the mother. Her energy may be very depleted; especially the Kidney energy, which, from an holistic viewpoint, is the underlying constitutional energy. This can be boosted, supported and nurtured with Shiatsu.

Shiatsu for baby

Babies love shiatsu. In fact it is very playful as well as helping with such conditions as colic, sleeplessness and constipation or diarrhoea.
